Osteopathy can be beneficial in improving the
symptoms of Down's Syndrome.
-
Glue ear and congestion: The base
of the skull in people with Down's Syndrome is flat
affecting the angle of the eustachian tube (ear canal) so
that it lies more horizontal, compromising its drainage.
The palate also develops differently as the large tongue is
held out a lot more. This in turn will affect the normal
pumping action of the palate contributing to poor drainage
of the ear canal and congestion.
-
Following heart surgery: To
improve the mechanics of the thorax helping with
respiration, to clear the chest more efficiently during
infections, and to help with the lymphatic pump which is
involved in circulation and immunity. The thymus gland lies
behind the chest bone in a child. Following heart surgery
this can be affected due to the effects of surgery on the
local tissues, and can result in altered mucus production.
-
Learning difficulties
-
General congestion: Treatment can
help to unblock the lymphatics, reducing congestion and
oedema.
